P&G’s sustainability road map is based on 14 goals established in 2010. Four new goals were announced in October 2014. These were to reduce water consumption by 20% per unit of production, provide 1 billion people access to water-efficient products, double use of recycled resin in plastic packaging, and ensure that 90% of its product packaging is recyclable or that programs are in place to enable it recycling.

Across the board P&G has made significant inroads against its targets and exceeded others. Since 2010, P&G’s energy usage has been reduced by severn percent, renewable energy use is now eight percent of total usage and CO2 emissions are down by 14% per unit of production.

P&G has exceeded its waste reduction goal by six years. P&G had called for 0.5% landfill input by 2020, but has achieved a rate of just 0.4%. Similarly, its 2015 goal of 40% of virgin wood fibers being from Forest Stewardship Council® certified sources was met a year early, achieving a rate of 54%.

P&G also delivered its 7 billionth litre of clean drinking water through The P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program, which P&G estimates has prevented an estimated 300 million disease days and 39,000 lives.

P&G’s commitment to zero deforestation in its palm oil supply chain remains unequivocal, the company has reinforced in its report. In support of this P&G has partnered with the Malaysia Institute for Supply Chain Innovation (MISI), part of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to develop a map of the supply chain in order to provide and ensure traceability.

In the report, P&G also commits to new goals relating to the expectation that its supply chain will not contribute to deforestation with all palm oil suppliers and other stakeholders.

P&G has also outlined its emphasis on building local teams in order to create bespoke operational, product design and innovative partnership benefits for local communities.

Innovation is also at the core of the approach to sustainability with internal teams working with leading external partners in order to have deliver high-impact innovations and projects.
