The Winner: Su-Mei Thompson, CEO of The Women’s Foundation: Mobilising support for gender diversity in the workplace

Su-Mei Thompson is CEO of The Women’s Foundation, an NGO dedicated to the advancement of women and girls in Hong Kong.  Since Su-Mei joined in 2009, TWF has significantly expanded the breadth of its research, programmes, education and advocacy.

Su-Mei is a passionate presenter on women’s issues and gender equality and has spoken at 40 Years of Women at Trinity College, Cambridge (2016); Hogan Lovells’ Global Women’s Executive Summit, New York (2016); The Women’s Forum Deauville (2014 and 2015) and Myanmar (2014); the IMF/World Bank Annual Meeting (2012); and delivered the Equal Opportunities Commission report to the UN CEDAW hearing, Geneva (2014).

Su-Mei avidly campaigns for the positive portrayal of women in the media, the subject of “She Objects”, a documentary for which she was Associate Producer and which was screened at Sundance HK.  She introduced the film at a 2016 Cannes Film Festival’s Women in Motion panel and the FLO Film Festival in Mumbai. Her TED talk “Dying To Be Thin” has been viewed over 20,000 times.

She has mobilised support for gender diversity in the workplace through efforts like the 30% Club, a group of leaders committed to bringing more women onto boards, and TWF’s Male Allies cohort.

She received the 2015 AmCham Women of Influence Award for Non-Profit Leader of the Year and the HKAH/Tatler Women of Hope Award for Power & Influence. She was named one of Hong Kong’s 100 Most Influential People by Debrett’s/SCMP (2015), and was a judge for the Diageo WE Journalism Awards (2014) and jury member for the Cannes Glass Lions Awards (2016)

She is a member of the Equal Opportunities Commission, board member of Opera HK and council member of The Cheltenham Ladies College, her alma mater.

Su-Mei holds law degrees from Cambridge and Oxford and an MBA from IMD.
