PublicAffairsAsia, in association with Edelman, has hosted a closed door executive roundtable examining the key opportunities arising from the creation of the ASEAN Economic Community.

The roundtable held at the InterContinental Hotel, Jakarta, on Wednesday 25 March examined the key corporate public affairs issues confronting business as it adapts to the realities of regional economic integration as the AEC comes into effect this year.

jakartaThe event attracted 25 senior public affairs practitioners from a wide variety of sectors including pharmaceuticals, banking, biotechnology, food and engineering. The roundtable event, which was opened by Mr. Ho Quang Trung, Director, Market Integration Directorate at ASEAN Secretariat examined the need for ASEAN institutions and governments to develop partnerships with the private sector.

Trung provided an update highlighting the key advances on the the AEC scorecard – which highlights progress made towards free economic and trade issues across the 10 country market.

Other speakers included Edelman Indonesia CEO, Stephen Lock, Professor Fiz Firmanzah, the Rector of Paramadina University, Katherine Rafaniello, the Head of the Political and Economic Mission of the US Mission to ASEAN and Theodore Baaker, the Vice Chairman of the EU-ASEAN Business Council.

Lock said: “The roundtable was a great opportunity for the ASEAN Secretariat and the US Mission to ASEAN to hear the views of the private sector about the readiness of the upcoming ASEAN Economic Community, which comes into effect at the end of this year. We see every day that MNCs are increasingly looking at whether they need to recalibrate their individual country public affairs strategies into a combined ASEAN engagement strategy. This event provided a great opportunity to discuss these issues in partnership with our client the ASEAN Secretariat.”

Craig Hoy, Executive Director of PublicaffairsAsia, said: “We were delighted to work with Edelman in hosting this key ASEAN briefing which brought together senior members of the ASEAN Secretariat together with policy experts and public affairs practioners to examine the challenge of ASEAN integration and its impact on business.”
